Hello!

2007 May 21 Posted by Charles

Hello! Welcome to Public Safety Signals! I’m delighted that we have a forum in which to discuss critical public safety issues of the day. I hope that this blog can serve to facilitate discussion about important public safety issues, and perhaps also help us as educators, students and citizens of the world gain new insights into these issues from each other.

Dr. Pascarella made a sobering opening post regarding the recent tragic events at Virginia Tech. Our condolences go out to the families of those lost in this tragedy.

I’ll add that on May 15, 2007, Steven J. Healy, President of IACLEA (International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators) presented to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor a report entitled “Best Practices for Making College Campuses Safe”. One of the recommendations is the establishment of a “National Center for Campus Public Safety”, which I believe can only help enhance safety on our campuses.

Please let us know your thoughts about campus safety.

Thanks

Jeffrey Harrington Says:

Dr. Tiffin,

I am a Police Lieutenant in the Tampa area of Florida. I am also in the Ph.D. in Business program. Several of our supervisors had the opportunity to attend leadership training with Dr. DeParis. It is great to see that Capella has created this type of program with such distinguished faculty. I am certain this will be extremely successful.

Charles Tiffin Says:

Jeffrey, thank you for being the first to post to Public Safety Signals. I appreciate your comments and agree concerning Dr. DeParis. I’m proud of our faculty team, who do represent distinguished service in the field and a strong commitment to education. Best to you at your Police Dept.

Dr. Tiffin, a little a month ago, I was in the process of deciding if I should enter the Master’s in Public Safety, Disaster Management degree path. I want to thank you for your time in speaking with me. I am enrolled and in my first class. As a Nurse and retired Paramedic, I am looking forward to the pursuit of this program. I also look forward to future visits to this site for discussion, information and enlightenment.

Thank you much,
Scot Reeves, RN, BS

Charles Tiffin Says:

Thanks for your note!

I am feeling more and more that I made the right decision when I decided to attend Capella University’s PhD in Public Safety w/Specialization in Criminal Justice degree program. This blog is a great idea.

Charles Tiffin Says:

April, thank you for joining us in the blog. I look forward to meeting you during your program!

Joy Spicer Says:

I am about halfway through my masters in criminal justice/human services. I have the option of getting a diploma the way I started or get one under the public safety umbrella. Which one do you think is more beneficial? Just trying to figure things out.

Charles Tiffin Says:

Joy, in either case you can’t go wrong in my view. Capella is one of the few colleges or universities to offer a BS, MS and PhD in Public Safety. However I believe that this will be a growing trend. Some who work in the HS area have shared with me that they believe that the HS degree offers them a more generalized degree and perhaps more career options. Many others have shared with me that the public safety degree provides instant degree recognition within the public safety domain. As with your degree specialization, this is a very individual decision. Please email me directly if you would like to discuss this further and I’ll be happy to help you evaluate your individual circumstances.
Thanks for the comment.

SBoyd Says:

I just started my PhD in Public Safety with a specialization in Criminal Justice. I agree that this area is growing fast and this will open many options in the public safety domain, including Corrections.

Charles Tiffin Says:

Hi SBoyd, thanks for your note and congratulations on taking a step moving forward toward your PhD. Also, keep an eye out in the next few weeks on news on Alpha Phi Sigma, which might be of interest to you in the CJ arena.

Joy Spicer Says:

I just got the email about Alpha Phi Sigma criminal justice honor society and I am excited that the opportunity to be part of this organization is being proffered.
