The Central Intelligence Agency issued an internal report that identified agency failures in the prevention of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. The report was completed in 2005, however it was not released until last week. The report concurs with many of the conclusions of the 911 Commission report; thatSafety agencies on the federal level did not cooperate or share information and that there were systematic breakdowns throughout.
The Inspector General John Helgerson was quoted the there was no “single point of failure nor a silver bullet” (CNN, para 5). This means that there was no one single failure. Actually, everybody failed throughout public safety. The first attack on February 26, 1993 should have instituted a more foreboding mentality in public safety, at all levels, but it did not.
Unfortunately, nearly six years since September 11, 2001, we are wasting valuable resources still trying to determine who was at fault. Our efforts in Public Safety should be focused on improving what went wrong prior to September 11, 2001 and how we are more secure because of those systematic changes.
Take care and stay safe.
