Immigration and Public Safety

2007 Dec 5 Posted by Joseph Pascarella

The United States Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced yesterday that arrests of criminal immigrant alien is increasing. The report goes on further to say that the criminal alien population is decreasing due to the increase in arrests. This statement is problematic given that a social or criminal problem does not dissipate solely because more public safety resources are devoted to that problem.

However, the DHS and ICE, are by all measures doing an excellent job, particularly with a very controversial issue, illegal immigration enforcement. There is also a large variance in illegal immigrants and who is deemed a “criminal alien”. Most criminal aliens are individuals who remain in the country passed their visa expiration date. A very small minority of criminal aliens are in the United States to commit criminal acts and an even smaller minority are here for serious criminal acts and terrorism. The DHS and ICE, like all public safety agencies, must focus valuable resources on the serious criminals given the United States historically tolerable attitude to immigrants.

As always, take care and stay safe.
