Today marks four years since Hurricane Katrina made landfall in New Orleans. While we have learned many lessons from that catastrophic disaster, there is always more work to do as a community and country, as we can never predict the nature or extent of the next emergent situation heading our way.
In fact, the new FEMA Administrator, Mr. Craig Fugate, has prepared a video message where he asks for all citizens to do their part to enhance preparedness. I believe that this important message could not come at a more salient time; FEMA, the Department of Homeland Security and the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) have designated September as National Preparedness Month, as we are beginning our journey into unfamiliar territory with falls classes resuming amid a worldwide pandemic of H1N1.
Would you please share any best practices that are you doing individually, in your community or as member of our public safety community, to enhance preparedness?
