Twentieth Anniversary – World Trade Center I

2013 Feb 26 Posted by Joseph Pascarella

Today is the Twentieth Anniversary of the first World Trade Center attack, in which 6 people, including a pregnant woman after a truck bomb exploded in the parking lots underneath the World Trade Center. The probable intent of the terrorists was to topple one of the Twin Towers into the other and collapse both buildings.

From a strategic and public safety standpoint, there were clear connections and motivation for another attack that were left unheeded until September 11, 2001.

The mastermind for the attack on February 26, 1993 was Ramzi Yousef who is the nephew of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was instrumental in the September 11, 2011 attacks. Ramzi Yousef was arrested by the FBI shortly after the 1993 attacks and is serving a life sentence in Federal Prison in Colorado. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was apprehended in 2003 in Pakistan and is now incarcerated in New York

Hopefully, we in the Public Safety community have learned from those mistakes to prevent another future attack.

Take care and be safe.
