Capella University today announces the launch of its new School of Public Service Leadership. We believe that this school will help prepare our public service leaders to address some of the most pressing issues of our time. The school brings together faculty and learners in three key fields: public safety, public administration and health care. Through a multidisciplinary approach, learners will gain new insights into their profession within the context of the larger public service environment. Our graduate public safety program, with our criminal justice, emergency management, and leadership specializations, is now part of this new school.

Is your role one of public service? How do you see public service evolving, especially in light of the Serve America Act recently passed into law?

Public safety and public service took center stage for a worldwide audience last week as the 44th President of the United States was inaugurated. It was reported that four times the normal security was on hand for the event witnessed by several million citizens. During the President’s speech he spoke eloquently about the country’s history of service, how the country was built upon this sense of service, and of the need to return to that tradition.

I applaud the President’s message, as well as all of those in the public safety field – as we know that our work is predicated on service. I look forward to seeing how the pages of history will unfold upon new traditions of public service in our country.

I welcome any thoughts and comments on the inauguration, the challenge to service and appreciation for our public safety professionals.

Charles

We are just hours away from inaugurating a new President. While this inauguration will be perhaps the most historical ever, we must realize that the decisions made by President Obama will affect public safety. How much public safety will be affected is not known and most likely won’t be known for at last a year.
In a preemptive measure several public safety organizations have sent letters to President Elect Obama in regards to FEMA with opposing requests.

Fire service organizations such as the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the Congressional Fire Service Institute (CFSI) asked President-Elect Obama to keep FEMA under the direction of the Department of Homeland Security. Another prominent organization, the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) has sent a letter to President-Elect requesting that FEMA be restored to independent status.

In some cases, emotions have run high on this issue, and both sides of the issue provide compelling arguments. Who should President Obama take advice from? I look forward to your responses.

As always, take care and stay safe, … Mark

Earlier this year, I wrote about the upcoming Presidential election and public safety. At that time, there was not much clarity in the race from both parties.

As of this writing, it appears that Senator John McCain of Arizona has clinched the Republican nomination and will face off in against either Senator Hillary Clinton from New York or Senator Barack Obama from Illinois. Given the backgrounds of each of the three, this should engage in some very interesting debate and dialogue about public safety. Senator McCain is a Vietnam veteran, Senator Obama has lived in several different geographic regions of the country and Senator Clinton has represented the State of New York since 2000 and has lead the state through the perils of 9/11.

Either of the three candidates has a very challenging mandate with respect to Public Safety, given the geopolitical circumstances of not changed significantly since the 9/11 attacks and an entire government agency, the Department of Homeland Security has been operational for nearly five years. Public safety issues will certainly be on the forefront during the election process.

Take care and stay safe.

Joe Pascarella
