The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced the 2011 FEMA Individual and Community Preparedness Awards. According to FEMA, “They recognize the innovative practices and achievements of organizations and individuals that work to make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to manage any emergency situation”. Do average Americans and disaster management professionals differ in their views about the threats facing the country and from where the threats might come? First Nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) Test

“FEMA (2011), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will conduct the first nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) Test on November 9, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time.”

How prepared are we 10 years after 9/11? – The panel video

To assess our preparedness for another disaster, Capella University partnered with leading national public service and public safety organizations, including the American Public Health Association, the American Society for Public Administration, the Comprehensive Emergency Management Research Foundation, and the FBI National Academy Associates to conduct a nationwide survey of more than 1,000 public service and public safety professionals.

We wanted to hear directly from those who would be on the front lines of the next crisis. The results indicated that 92% of public service professionals believe that collaboration in the emergency preparedness community has improved 10 years after 9/11.

Capella faculty shared the results of our 10 Years Later survey with national emergency management leaders on Sept. 13 in New York City. Panelist seen in these videos include Joseph Pascarella, a retired NYPD Captain and Dan Martin, current President of CEMR Foundation are both Capella faculty members.
